Manny's No Good? →
There have been plenty of columnists saying that Manny’s washed up, got nothing in the tank, is a mere shell of his former self, etc etc etc. The only problem is that doesn’t really jive with the facts. Aaron Gleeman from Hardball Talk with some numbers:
“Since “he was busted for being a performance-enhancing drug cheat” Ramirez has batted .287 with a .396 on-base...

My Imaginary Mid-Game Twitter Feed from CJ Wilson
Wilson picked up his 14th win as he allowed only two hits across 7.2 innings in the Rangers 3-0 victory against the Royals. CJ Wilson is one of the rare pitchers who makes me wish players had access to their smartphones during games. Here is what I wish Wilson could have been tweeting throughout:
Just got to the stadium. Playing the Royals. More like the Spoyals. Like spoiled food. Get it?...

The last time Jason Marquis got a win before last night. Marquis moved to 1-7 with 5.2 innings of three run ball as the Nationals beat the Marlins 9-3. The victory was also Marquis’ first as a National and lowered his ERA to 8.13. That’s $7.5 million well spent.
Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn both homered in the victory.

Just a Little Hospital Humor
Gordon Beckham after leaving the game to get X-rays which (eventually)came back negative:
“The guy actually came out of the X-ray room and said it was broken,” Beckham said of a hospital employee’s weak attempt at humor. “It was like, ‘Are you kidding me? That’s rookie league stuff.”’
Those doctors—always injecting appropriate humor into a pennant race.

Teixeira - Cano - Swisher
Those names probably won’t go down in history as the greatest threesome in Yankees lore, but they still had quite the night against Trevor Cahill and the Athletics. The three batsmen were a combined 9-11 with 7 RBI and 2 HR in the Yanks 11-5 take down of Oakland. The rest of the Yankee lineup on the other hand could only manage a measly four hits.
I’m sure Cahill (4 IP, 8 ER) knows...

Is This Pirates Team the Worst In Their 124 Year... →
Hmm. After listing the terrible pitching, hitting, fielding, baserunning and managing of the club, let’s see what beat writer Dejan Kovacevic had to say after the Pirates lost 14-2 to the Cubs:
“At the end, of course, there is the terrible record of 43-88, on pace for 53-109.
And, with all due respect to the 1890 Pittsburg Alleghenys who went 23-113 when they were not working in...

It’s awesome. There’s not a guy on this team I like watching more have success....
– Troy Tulowitzki on Todd Helton coming through with his sixth home run of the year in the Rockies 5-3 defeat of the Dodgers. The win puts the Rockies a game ahead of the Dodgers as they try and chase down the two-headed Phillies/Giants Wild Card holders.
Todd Helton is now 9 for his last 19 with two...

Omar Infante’s batting average after picking up two more hits in the Braves 12-3 win against the Marlins. Infante is quickly approaching the necessary number of at-bats needed to qualify for the batting title and ruin Albert Pujols’ hopes for the triple crown. I’ll apologize for saying Infante didn’t deserve to go to the All-Star game if he stops getting at-bats. Is that a...

I could care less where I hit.
– Adam Dunn continuing his assault on traditional baseball values. Dunn broke out of a slump with two hits including his 32nd home run of the season as he looks to reach the 40 homer plateau for the sixth time. The Nationals beat the Cardinals who look like they have no desire to go to the postseason...

RBI for Jose Bautista after he doubled and tripled while driving in two during the Blue Jays 5-4 victory against the Tigers. Of course, Bautista will be punished accordingly tonight for not hitting any home runs. Seriously disappointing performance today. Apparently I should also change my blog’s name to Old Time Family Jose Bautista Playing Baseball because that’s all I ever post...

Joe Torre Is Pretty Cool
You know how Casey Blake went all grand slammy last night in the Dodgers victory? Turns out Torre was wearing one of these amazing “In Beard We Trust” tee-shirts from The LFP.
From Tony Jackson’s game story:
“As Torre spoke, his jersey was unbuttoned far enough to reveal a blue T-shirt underneath, on which was an illustration of a large coin with a profile of third...

Brewers 7, Pirates 2
Innings 1-6 (Which I Didn’t See): Pirates lead 2-1 and James McDonald is cruising. The Brewers can’t square the ball up, and it looks like the Pirates might win a quick one.
Innings 7-9 (Which I Did Tune In For): James McDonald gets destroyed to the tune of six earned runs and the Pirates absolutely fall apart. They never mount anything resembling a rally and ensure that anyone who...

AJ Burnett’s ERA as he’s dropped his last four decisions. It’s another serious chink in the Yankees rotation armor as Burnett is struggling along with Vasquez and an injured Pettite. While the Bombers have reason to hope/expect/use dark magicks to get them back in shape for the postseason, Sabathia and Hughes is probably not enough to win another championship.
The White Sox beat...

Three-hit games for Josh Hamilton, a number good enough to lead the Majors. Hamilton picked up three more hits and another RBI in the Rangers 7-3 win against the Athletics. Tommy Hunter moved to 11-2.
The A’s lost Brett Anderson to a hyperextended knee after only two innings, but I think they’ll take that injury compared to the many and varied arm shredding injuries that can easily...
