Is This Pirates Team the Worst In Their 124 Year History? →

Hmm. After listing the terrible pitching, hitting, fielding, baserunning and managing of the club, let’s see what beat writer Dejan Kovacevic had to say after the Pirates lost 14-2 to the Cubs:

“At the end, of course, there is the terrible record of 43-88, on pace for 53-109.

And, with all due respect to the 1890 Pittsburg Alleghenys who went 23-113 when they were not working in the mills and mines, as well as the 1952 “Rickey Dinks” who went 42-112, the current Pirates are operating in a sporting atmosphere where such anomalies are increasingly rare. In Major League Baseball, no team has lost more than 106 since the 2004 Arizona Diamondbacks went 51-111.”

After the Cubs sent 20 batters to the plate across the fourth and fifth innings, is there really anything else you need to add? Oh yeah, Mr. Anger Management himself, Carlos Zambrano, added a two-run home run. I really try to remain objective about my team, but yeesh, this is getting hard.

I would say there’s nowhere to go but up… but I’m sure the Pirates would trade that ability away for a couple of C and B...
