Ryan Roberts Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam, Impersonates Kirk Gibson Along the Way
Even with little to play for, the Diamondbacks refuse to bow down to the Dodgers. After Micah Owings came in and allowed five runs in the top of the tenth inning, a clear enough signal for everyone to turn off their television sets, the Diamondbacks stormed back in the bottom half with six runs to take the game, culminating in Ryan Roberts’ game-winning grand slam.
I would love to embed the highlight for your viewing, so that you could conveniently watch it without following a hippie to a second location, so to speak, but if you want to see Roberts impersonate Kirk Gibson’s arm pumps, you’ll need to click here.
“You see guys have walk-off home runs and they do a celebration. Everybody has their own little thing. I always told ‘C.Y.’ (Chris Young) and ‘J-Up’ (Justin Upton) that if I ever hit a walk-off home run, I’m going to do the ‘Gibby’ pump,” Roberts said.
“If you watch him, he does it twice, too. Some people don’t remember him doing that. We do. I’m just glad I remembered to do it. I finally got it out of the way. I’ll have to come up with something new now,” Roberts said gleefully.”
As we live in a nostalgia-obsessed culture, I really hope that the Diamondbacks try to create a “Best Of the Playoffs” mix tape as they advance to the next round of play. Perhaps a little bloodied sock, maybe some Carlton Fisk foul ball watching, and maybe even a Jeffrey Maier thrown in for added drama.
