If I was an Orioles fan, I would be counting down the days until April 1, 2011 when they open the season against the Tampa Bay Rays because chances are quite good that Brian Matusz will get the nod in that game. Brian Matusz has a lot of people picking him to have a breakout season this year, and while the one-and-a-half year pro may not have lived up to those overzealous expectations, now that no one is really paying attention he has certainly rounded into shape.
Over the last ten starts, Matusz has posted a 2.25 ERA including 7 shutout innings tonight against a Rays team that has the ownership of the AL East within their grasp, but still they could do nothing. Matusz gave up only three hits and struck out eight. Brian Matusz is going to be a dominant big league starter and he’s giving the AL a little taste of that over the last two months.
Nick Markakis tripled and drove in two runs during his worst professional season yet in the win.
