Mitch Talbot’s a little old to be your conventional rookie, but the Indians should be proud to call on him as a midrotation starter for the next four or five years. That is assuming that Talbot can either get his walks under control or find a way to strike a few more batters out. An 88:59 K:BB ratio will have a real hard time being at the root of success, no matter how many strikeouts.
But that’s a concern for next year. Today Talbot threw seven shutout innings against the Tigers to become the second Indian to win 10 games on the year. While the end of the baseball season is always depressing, they at least allow for games like this where everyone to rally around and say “Talbot’s performance is a great jumping off point and will boost the confidence going into next season yada yada yada.” Hey, it’s probably not true, but whatever you need to get yourself through the winter before pitchers and catchers report.
