Royals Sign Jonathan Broxton. The Royals have their hot prospects, their young guns, their gritty freeswingers, but until now they didn’t have their fat guy. For $4 million, they got their fat guy (credit to Mike on this one).

Earlier today, Jed Hoyer and Theo Epsten made their first splash with the Cubs by signing outfielder David DeJesus to a two-year, $10 million contract. The deal carries an option and buyout for 2014 as well. DeJesus struggled last year with Oakland, hitting .240/.323/.376, but he went into the season with a .289/.360/.427 line. If he bounces back at the plate and plays his usual solid defense, then this will be a great deal for Chicago.

Colorado signed catcher Ramon Hernandez to a two-year, $6.4 million deal. Hernandez played well in a limited role last year for the Reds. The Rockies also sent catcher Chris Ianetta to the Angels for 21 year-old right-hander Tyler Chatwood. Ianetta figures to get the starting job for the Halos. He’s no Napoli, but he’s also no Mathis. Chatwood started 25 games for the Angels in 2011, turning in 142 innings, a 4.75 ERA, and a 74/71 K/BB ratio.

The Tigers inked Ramon Santiago to a two-year, $4 million pact. Right before the off season, I threw all of my savings into a hedge fund betting for a surge in the utility man market.
