We were robbed. The baseball gods looked down at the puny people wandering this earth and took from us what should have been one of the classic World Series pitching performances of all time. But that’s how it goes. When two of the best square off on the big stage, it seems they always go down in flames. I’m sure the numbers will show that to be absolute nonsense, just as a player making a spectacular catch doesn’t always lead off the next inning, but it does confirm that the universe is a cold and uncaring place.
Cliff Lee gave up six earned runs through 4.2 innings, matching the amount of earned runs he’d surrendered in his last five starts combined. And that’s postseason included. Naturally, Tim Lincecum went shot for shot with an almost equally disgraceful four earned runs in 5.2 innings. Most frightening was the lack of strikeouts Mr. Freak picked up, setting down only three Rangers via the K.
The bullpens will be tired tomorrow, but that shouldn’t matter tomorrow. Since tonight’s pitching matchup flopped, karmically speaking tomorrow will probably feature dueling no-hitters.
Giants win 11-7 and take a 1-0 series lead.
