Even if Lee and Lincecum didn’t make a mess of their beds last night, they would have been hard pressed to do better than what was arguably the best pitched game one of the World Series ever.
It was 1949, the suburbs were bustling, boys were boys and men were men, and Freddy Martin was burning up the charts. And on October 5th, Don Newcombe and Allie Reynolds squared off to pitch eight and a half innings of shutout baseball. But then Tommy Henrich hit a home run to lead off the ninth inning because all good things must come to an end. Sorry, Don.
