Transactions of Note and Import
- Pirates re-sign Jeff Clement to minor league deal. After a .201/.237/.368 line in 2010 and an injury plagued 2011, the Pirates had no choice but to bring back the first round bust. You don’t let players like that get away. They also signed Anderson Hernandez, insuring
- Nationals sign nine to minor league deals. The biggest name is probably Chad Tracy who posted a 132 OPS+ in 2005, but has been a jumble of injuries since then. They also claimed third baseman Carlos Rivera off of waivers from the Phillies.
- Rockies sign Casey Blake. Last chance to buy this beaut before it comes in purple.
- Ronald Bellisario gets visa…and 25 game suspension. It’s fortunate that he’s a Dodger as there are so many other problems plaguing the team this can probably just slip by unnoticed.
- Rangers acquire Luis Martinez from Padres. In exchange, the Rangers gave up Ryan Kelly. It’s the kind of trade that makes you say “I think I’ve heard of those guys. Maybe.”
- Brewers sign Cesar Izturis. Izturis still has an above average glove, making the absence of Yuniesky Betancourt that much sweeter.
- Cardinals sign Eugenio Velez and RJ Swindle. You know what having the longest hitless streak gets you? A minor league contract with the World Champs, that’s what.
- Royals sign Jose Mijares. As a lefthander, Mijares was actually extremely valuable between 2008 and 2010. Unfortunately, 2011 saw him post equal K and BB rates, an untenable position if ever there was one.
- Cubs sign Reed Johnson. The stirrups are back.
- Indians sign Andy LaRoche. Somewhere, there is a small LaRoche child who will one day make good on all his promise. Sadly, this is not that LaRoche boy.
