As you may have noticed from the glut of articles outlining writers Hall of Fame votes (with my own feelings en route), the Hall of Fame announcement will soon be coming. Without new names worthy of real discussion, writers are once again focusing on Jeff Bagwell’s Cooperstown case. Despite 449 home runs, a .948 OPS, a Rookie of the Year and MVP, and 79.9 rWAR, numbers that would usually make him a shoe-in candidate, many are concerned that Bagwell used performance enhancers simply because he hit home runs was surrounded by so many who did.
Over at the Platoon Advantage, The Common Man breaks it down and reveals that every Hall of Famer who played during “The Steroid Era” was only one Kevin Bacon away from a PED user.
Should future evidence reveal that Bagwell injected steroids and drank children’s tears, we would be looking at a different story. But assuming a player used steroids simply because of the time he played and how he looked only excuses the players smart enough to not hit home runs or show off their muscles.
