Manny Ramirez Continues to Live in His Own World
Manny Ramirez’s act was a cute for a while. Who didn’t enjoy impromptu grill sales and mid-game Green Monster urination? Hell, even his outfield oafing gave his play a certain child-like charm. But then Manny got older and he started breaking Major League Baseball rules and then he was arrested this past September after a domestic dispute. We were all happy that Manny Ramirez had crawled away with his millions and wouldn’t be heard from again.
But now he’s back and trying to catch on with a Major League team. And because his swing, rust and all, is still probably one of the ten most beautiful things on Earth, he may get his chance. But proving that Manny still doesn’t get it and probably never will, he told ESPN:
“A bunch of guys are going to look at me and say hey, this guy made a mistake but he didn’t quit. Look how he finished. He did the right thing and came back.”
I’m not sure if Ramirez expects the rest of the league to rise and cheer for a man who has officially and unofficially quit on his team multiple times, failed drug tests multiple times, and generally treats his job like some kind of dodge, but I’m going to wager that’s not going to happen.
