Bethany Heck:

So, this came out awhile back, but I was lucky enough to get it in my Christmas stocking and wanted to encourage anyone who hasn’t bought it to go grab a copy now. 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Wilfred Santiago, which is about, you guessed it, Roberto Clemente’s life and baseball career.

It’s a fascinating format to study a fascinating person, both on and off the field. Santiago’s illustrations are simple, raw and graphic, printed in black and gold, and he brilliantly captures the mystical nature of baseball in his exaggerations. Baseball players, unlike other athletes, have a mythos surrounding them that makes them seem otherworldly, especially through the eyes of children. This book belongs on the shelf of every baseball fan, especially those of us interested in art and design as well. It will be a great way to help ease the wait for spring training!
