Things You May Have Missed While You Were Living Your Life
While you were busy enjoying not being Billy Cundiff, the world of baseball spun on unabated.
David Eckstein retires. Maybe. He’s even gritting out his retirement announcement.
Kevin Millwood signs with the Mariners to minor league deal. Millwood may be nothing more than back of rotation fodder at this point, the Mariners and Safeco Field are quite good at making back of rotation fodder look much nicer.
Mike Piazza says he wants to go into Hall as a Met. Of course, he was asked this while at a Knicks game so would he really answer the Dodgers? Sadly, players are no longer in control of what cap they will be given, so assuming he’s elected, it will be interesting to see how the Hall factors in the Tommy Lasorda factor. Personally, for every decision I make, I ask myself what would Tommy Lasorda do.
Indians sign Julio Lugo to minor league contract. Lugo posted a -2 OPS+ in 48 at-bats last season, but still, that’s a negative two.
Tigers sign Brad Eldred to minor league deal. This is a great signing for many reasons. I will now list them:
- Without Victor Martinez, the Tigers need offensive depth.
- Brad Eldred hits lots of home runs (227 in the minors).
- He’s big (6’6”).
- He’s beefy (255 lbs).
- His nickname is Big Country.
- He also strikes out a lot and walks a fair amount. Which is fun when someone is big and beefy and hits home runs.
Brad Hawpe signs with the Rangers. Thank god. I have more time to work on my Hawpe on Pawpe manuscript.
Indians acquire Kevin Slowey for Zach Putnam. What if Kevin Slowey was like the really sad version of a Matt Christopher book and he could only lose baseball games? Since this is real life (I think), he should probably improve on that 0-8, 6.67 ERA from last year.
Astros sign Chris Snyder. Catchers with the ability to hit home runs are a rare beast indeed, though I guess this spells the end of Humberto Quintero’s reign atop the Astros depth chart.
Rays sign Carlos Pena. Limited quantities of Prince Fielder still available.
Blue Jays sign Nelson Figueroa. He did just allow one run in 6.1 innings in game two of the Dominican Winter League’s serie final, so there’s that.
Rays sign Will Rhymes. Not many Chipotles in Tampa which could be a problem for the second baseman.
