Transactions of Note and Import

DUI charges dropped against James Loney. Without enough evidence after Loney hit three cars, prosecutors had to admit that Loney is just a terrible, terrible driver and possible crazy person.

Padres sign Micah Owings. It’s only a minor league deal despite Owings immediately becoming their best hitter.

Mariners sign Carlos Guillen. Turns out you can go home again. Doesn’t hurt that his .633 OPS last season would still top Chone Figgins’ by nearly .200 points. Of course, Figgins has $8 million coming to him while Guillen will be working on a minor league pact.

Pirates sign Juan Cruz. Okay.

Nationals sign Chad Durbin. Am I the only one who calls him Dustbin Durbin? Can we get that going?

Orioles sign Casey Fossum. Lankiness is the new inefficiency.

Blue Jays DFA Darin Mastroianni. He went 0-for-2 last season in his Major League debut. I can’t stand the sadness when I see a player without a Major League hit, so hopefully he’ll make his way back onto a roster.

White Sox sign Dan Johnson. The last time the White Sox play the Red Sox is on July 19. If Dan Johnson wants to end Boston’s season, he’s going to have his work cut out.
