Cuba May Let Players Sign Abroad →
From the Miami Herald:
“The Cuban Federation of Baseball is considering a proposal that would permit Cuban players to join professional leagues in other countries, a source close to the federation told El Nuevo Herald…This is very exciting news if it comes to pass. Even though the players would not be able to immediately sign with a Major League club, it would be much easier to defect once they are already living and playing in a new country. Cuban ballplayers are notoriously difficult to scout because other than a few international tournaments their only competition comes from within the country. Now scouts could get a more accurate reading on their true talent level and possibly have an easier time in signing them.
The initiative would allow Cuban players to join professional leagues and keep 60 percent of their wages, while the government collects the remaining 40 percent, the sources said.
The countries where Cubans would be permitted to play are: Taipei, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Italy.
Players would not be allowed to sign with Major League Baseball clubs because of the United States trade embargo on Cuba.”
