Jake Peavy Keeps It On The Hundo*
When asked about his health for the upcoming season, Peavy said:
“I’m as 100 percent as I can be. I don’t know if I’m 100 percent as to what I was four years ago. I know I’m as 100 percent as 100 percent is going to get after what I had done (surgically). I guess that’s the best way to say it.”
He then added “but not 100% of my previous 100%. That would have to be 70-75% of the aforementioned 100%, but now we’re discussing a relative scale, and well, who knows what my 100% is compared to someone else’s 100%?”
Though Peavy may never again be the pitcher who went 58-33 with a 2.97 ERA and 9.6 K/9 between 2004-2007, he is still a pitcher with plenty of upside, striking out nearly 8 men per nine last year with a K/BB of nearly 4. The detached muscle in his back may have stolen a great pitcher prematurely, though Peavy’s best years already seemed to be behind him when the injury struck. If Peavy can’t remain healthy and effective enough in the rotation, his blend of strikeouts and control could uniquely suit him for end of the game bullpen work. He’s certainly intense enough.
*That’s what the kids are saying these days, right?
