"I’m going to be my own person. There are a lot of professional athletes back in the old days that did what they wanted to do. That’s how I’m going to be. I’m going to prove myself on the field, so I can be that kind of guy off the field. I’m not a clown off the field. I just say things … I speak my mind and I think that’s good. If I speak my mind and people know the real me, then they are going to like me more. I’m not a liar. I say things I want to say. That’s how it is, I guess."

And that’s the paradox of Bryce Harper. Washington’s stud prospect made a name for himself in the minors last year by cruising through Single-A before struggling a bit in Double-A. He’s a guy who everyone in baseball, not just Nationals fans, will be watching, and to that end, he’s shown his sweet side and his tough side. Not a clown but still thrown into a position where everyone will expect him to captivate…all the time. Not that I feel bad for him.

Even at the young age of 19 - 19! - Harper has the chance to make the cut out of Spring Training. It’s probably a longer shot if you can look at it from beyond the aura of greatness that surrounds this kid. But seriously, 19

It’s going to be awful writing about some of these young Washington players if they live up to their hype because jealousy is a two-seam fastball to the knuckles. Or something.
