Transactions of Note and Import
Padres sign Jeff Suppan. Suppan gets a minor league deal, and presumably, in addition to the $950,000 he’ll earn if he gets on the major league roster, he’ll be able to plug his restaurant to the umpire and opposing catcher whenever he comes to bat.
Red Sox head to arbitration with David Ortiz. I have a feeling he’ll get something closer to the $16.5 million number he submitted, especially after last year’s resurgent performance. Red Sox fans will continue to complain about about re-signing the guy who hit .309/.398/.554 last year while cutting his K/BB ration from 145/82 to 83/78.
Rangers sign Elvis Andrus to three-year extension. $14.4 million lets Texas wrap up Andrus’ three year of arbitration eligibility and nets the 23-year-old a lot of money. If we’re judging Andrus’ ability solely on his ESPN.com picture, then we can say he’s slick and cocky in a debonair sort of way.
Yankees sign Russell Branyan. Branyan gets a minor league deal. Throw this in the, “eh, might as well” category.
