A’s To Sign Yoenis Cespedes

Proving that the A’s are half-baseball team, half Hollywood powerhouse, the Athletics have surprised the baseball world by reportedly signing Yoenis Cespedes to a 4-year, $36 million dollar contract and exclusive first-look deal on all future film projects. Cespedes, as you’ll recall, first came to National relevance by releasing a 20+ minute “scouting” video that included Star Wars scrolling font, a thank you to Mom and Ahman Green, and a roasting pig. Oh, there were some actual athletic endeavors in there too. Having Cespedes in place is a fitting follow-up to Moneyball the book and movie that Billy Beane surely wrote, directed, and starred in. (I’m too busy to actual watch all that simulated, computerized baseball nonsense).

More seriously, this is the shock of the offseason. Most saw these new look, tax and spend Marlins, with their endless supply of cash and large Cuban population, as a good fit for Cespedes. If not them, well, it was supposed to be one of the usual handful of teams with deep pockets that line up to sign fresh faced talent. Instead, the A’s, whose outfield typically produces at a deadball rate, ponied up money for a very strong, very unknown quantity in Cespedes. Either the A’s will turn out to be spectacularly wrong and will hamper themselves in the future (Cespedes is already the A’s highest paid player by $3M) or the A’s scouts saw something that makes this an absolute bargain. And just like when the Reds signed Aroldis, isn’t it just more fun when the unexpected team swoops in for the kill?

For $9 million, you better believe Billy Beane expects Cespedes to play from day one. And as Steve Slowinski points out, the A’s now have a bit of an outfield surplus which will be import as they must rebuild their pitching rotation since that’s now depleted.
