Apathy on This, The Day of Love: Nationals Edition

While hunting around Google for “Apathy + Baseball,” since apathy is the opposite of love and today is Valentine’s Day, I stumbled upon this great article from the February 21, 1974 Star-News titled, “Washington Apathetic About Return of Baseball.”

Says one man in his 50s:

“Look, if they’re going to bring in another loser, like most of those Washington baseball teams we used to have, tell them not to bother. What’s the point in getting another baseball team in here and having to wait around for 30 years for it to win? People in this city will only support a winner now, or at least teams which have a chance to win like the Redskins or the Bullets.”

Oh, how the times have changed. For one, the Nationals  have two of the most exciting, young players in baseball and are ready to contend; and two, no one in DC wants to talk about the Wizards or Redskins, that’s for sure.

But if you want to be reminded of your one true love, and I speak of your MLB.tv subscription, just listen to this bell captain’s plea:

“What I hope is that we get a National League team, no matter which one. I’ve seen all the players in the American League, but I’ve only read about those in the National. I’d like to see ‘em.”

I’ll never take you for granted again, MLB.tv. I promise.
