Jerry Sands: Professional Baseballer and Substitute Teacher

Like Tom Berenger in The Substitute, Jerry Sands also moonlights as a substitute teacher. Only difference is that Sands probably hasn’t infiltrated and taken down a local gang (but can we really be certain?). Unfortunately, his career as a Los Angeles Dodger is getting in the way of molding the minds of America’s youth.

From the LA Times

“Jerry Sands was awakened at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday by a phone call.

The automated call was from the Johnston County School District in North Carolina, where the second-year outfielder worked as a substitute teacher in the off-season. He was informed there was a shift available.

“I have to call them and tell them I’m not in town,” Sands said. “I have to get it out of the way so they quit calling me. There’s a couple hours difference.”

Should Sands, who hit .253/.338/.389 with 4 HR and a 102 OPS+ over 227 plate appearances as a rookie last season, showcase his considerable power and take an open roster spot, he’ll probably say goodbye to the offseason job. $480,000, the Major League minimum, can do that for a person.
