Shirley Jackson’s Competitive Balance Lottery

Tomorrow, the first, and perhaps most complicated part of the new CBA will go into effect, that of the competitive balance lottery.

Starting at 1:30, thirteen teams with the lowest revenue will be in the running to earn one of six picks that come after the first round, and then six more picks will be released to the teams not selected in the first group of selections along with any other clubs receiving revenue sharing. And then, if a team spends more than the median, but earns less than the mean of the league, while posting a sub .500 record for 2 of the last 3 years, will receive another bonus selection at the end of the fifth round.*

Make sense? No, not really? Jonathan Mayo has the full write-up, which I would suggest you read so that you will sound all kinds of smart tomorrow when the Tigers receive a bonus pick despite having the best pitcher and perhaps two of the best hitters in the game.

*No they won’t. I made that up. I don’t even remember the difference between median and mean. And what the hell is mode?
