After failing to land Cliff Lee, Zack Greinke, and seemingly out of the bidding for Carl Pavano, the Nationals finally found someone to bolster their rotation, acquiring Tom Gorzelanny from the Cubs.
The Nationals gave up three prospects, lefthander Graham Hicks, righty AJ Morris, and outfielder Michael Burgess. Though none of the players are on the Nationals top ten prospect list, Hicks and Morris may be future bullpen arms and Burgess offers some power as a potential fourth outfielder.
Though Gorzelanny has had some extremely poor seasons mixed in with a strong 2007 and 2010, many Pirates fans can attest to the fact that he came to camp in 2008 with dead arm following Jim Tracy’s abuse in 2007. Whether that was the cause of Gorzelanny’s poor seasons or not, Gorzelanny will be under team control through 2013 and is a lefthander who can strike out plenty of batters when he finds the plate. Factor in his excellent pitch face, and the Nationals should have a somewhat respectable rotation until Stephen Strasburg returns.
