Rangers Acquire Ryan Dempster

Ryan Dempster was a trade target even before the season was fully underway. The talk and scrutiny only intensified in the days leading up to the trade deadline, which saw Dempster veto a trade to the Braves and then maybe sort of could be traded to the Dodgers. Of course, several other teams in contention for the playoffs were mentioned as being interested in the man.

One of those teams, the Rangers, got their man, surprising many with a trade that will net them at least two months of RyDempstion (someone let me know if I indeed just made that up) for minor league third baseman Christian Villanueva and RHP Kyle Hendricks. It was inevitable that Dempster would be traded this year, and Texas needed pitching help after losing both Colby Lewis and Neftali Feliz to season-ending injuries alongside Roy Oswalt’s ineffectiveness.

Dempster has a plus-plus beard to go along with an 83/27 K/BB ratio and 2.25 ERA in 104 IP, though his FIP does come in at 3.41. For a Texas team that’s come close to winning it all for the past couple of years, this was the trade they had to make, especially with Zack Greinke off the table.and pitching for their division rival. They’ll only get a couple of months of him guaranteed, and they’ll hope to get what the Cubs did for most of this year.
