Bring Your Pitcher to Work Day
With Jed Hoyer desperately trying to put a deal together with Ryan Dempster’s first choice team, the Dodgers, before eventually settling on the Rangers, Dempster came by the executive offices check out the action. I’d imagine there are a few choice ‘air quotes’ that Hoyer left out:
“I was really actually glad he was in our office the last couple of hours,” Hoyer said. “To be able to see how we work and see what happens. He sort of sat in our office and watched himself on TV. Then we kind of briefed him on where things were, and at some point, he sort of said ‘Well, if this Dodger thing is not going to work…’ and he sort of opened it up to a handful of teams.”
I like to think that while Hoyer was on the phone, trying desperately to juggle the multiple offers being floated, Dempster paced around the office, picking things up and asking “What’s this thing do?” before accidentally breaking something before putting it back on the shelf and hiding it behind a family photograph. It’s pure speculation, but that’s probably why he agreed to play for a new team.
