Instead of abolishing the good-in-theory, bad-in-practice camouflage jerseys, the Padres have instead added one to the rotation with the Marines signature camo print. One problem: because the camo on these jerseys is computer generated, it’s quite possible the Padres will look like brownish/khakish blobs on the playing field.
From the San Diego Union-Tribune, as passed on by Big League Stew:

“The digital pattern creates no solid lines or edges and blurs the outline of the human profile. Even the seams have soft edges.

As a Marine wearing a MARPAT uniform moves around, the colors mesh with the background.
“Up close, they look great,” said Jack Ensch, the Padres’ retiring director of military affairs. “But they are going to blend in more on television and from the stands. Many fans aren’t going to be able to tell that these are camouflage uniforms paying tribute to the military.”

While I love the idea of the Padres paying respect to the military bases that surround San Diego, I feel there would be better ways to approach this than putting the team in ridiculous jerseys that will end up making them look more like UPS deliverymen than athletes and Marines.
Personally, I wish teams would introduce an all-neon green jersey so that fans could create their own baseball highlights through an MLB sanctioned green screen challenge. Come on, baseball, embrace the 21st century!
