Bobby Valentine had a relatively quiet week (in Bobby V. terms) before this one, with the only notable incident being the one where he threatened to punch a Boston sports talk radio host in the mouth. Well, Bobby V. returned to the airwaves today, this time sitting down with Boston’s Glenn Ordway to pick up where he left off.

“Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine joined The Big Show from Fenway Park one week after jokingly declaring that he’d like to punch host Glenn Ordway and brought along boxing gloves for the occasion. In an interview that had far less tension than last week, Valentine was asked if he thinks he’ll be back managing the Sox next season.”

Of course, Bobby V. most likely had every intention of donning the gloves and duking it out in a style that even Old Hoss Radbourn would admire. But alas, it was not meant to be, and the Red Sox manager had to settle for an interview that focused on such things as Bobby V. driving beloved player Kevin Youkilis out of Boston. It turns out that a full on blood bath would have been preferable to Red Sox fans, as became clear when Mr. Valentine responded to a question about whether or not he would be manning the dugout next year:

“It’s not up to me, but I think I will be, yeah. And beyond. Why would I say that I want to be here for 2013 as though that’s going to be the end of something? That will be the continuation and hopefully the beginning of something really special. Why would I think it’s going to be a year’s job?”

To be fair, he does have a year left on his contract. To be fairer, Valentine’s managerial skills make Grady Little’s infamous Pedro Martinez decision look like the sly machinations of a Tony La Russa pitching change, and his social skills put him on par with Solomon Grundy. Throw in the dissent in the clubhouse and an inability to stay up to speed, and well, that’s why it would be a year’s job.
