Raul Ibanez Carries Yankees Over Orioles, NYC Cosmos Collapses Under Weight of Negative A-Rod Headlines

If you told me at the beginning of the year that the Orioles were going to storm their way to the playoffs, and that Ryan Flaherty was going to hit what turns out to be a pretty big home run in a big game against the Yankees, I’m not sure that I would have believed you. But, lo and behold, that’s what happened tonight. And of course, it’s only fitting that Manny Machado added a solo shot of his own to put the Birds ahead for a few innings.

New York also ran into Miguel Gonzalez - this guy - who proceeded to pitch seven innings of one-run ball. He struck out eight, didn’t walk a batter, and gave up the lone run. Hiroki Kuroda pitched into the ninth and put together a solid game of his own, except for two breaking balls that got too much of the plate.

However, while the Yankees might be showing some age, they’re also experienced and grizzled playoff veterans. Like Raul Ibanez, who tied things up with a home run in the bottom of the ninth while pinch-hitting for none other than Alex Rodriguez. You couldn’t ask a New York baseball reporter to make something like that up, so I can only imagine how hard A-Rod will get it in the papers tomorrow.

And of course, in such a scenario, Ibanez could only go on to hit the walk off home run as well. I mean, can you even sleep if you’re a member of the New York sports media tonight? Is the blood lust strong enough to keep you awake?

It was a tough loss for the Orioles, who had a chance to go up 2 - 1 in the team’s biggest game since the 1997 season. There’s some solace in the fact that game three is yet to be played, and if anyone can rebound from this, you have to figure it’s this Orioles team.
