Derek Jeter Breaks Ankle, Everyone’s Hearts

Derek Jeter, the most recognizable shortstop for baseball’s most popular team, and the career leader in playoff games by 30, fractured his ankle in the 12th inning of tonight’s Tigers win.

Moving to his left to field a groundball, Jeter flipped the ball and then crumpled to the ground. While Jeter’s defense is an easy target and his leadership and steely eyes are often overrated, Jeter is both the on-field and clubhouse captain

Regardless of your opinion on the Yankees, you never want to have a Hall of Fame shortstop go out this way. And not only is this a reminder of the Yankees aging core, with Mariano Rivera out and Alex Rodriguez struggling, but it’s also a startling example of how frail the human body is.

The Yanks are not quite the Yanks without baseball’s greatest smile, so this ALCS will be a strange experience.
