Chipper Jones: Not a Fan of Men in Basements

Chipper Jones to Jeff Schultz at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

“I still feel like I have something to offer, and the cynical fan can really kiss my ass. I really don’t care. There’s a bunch of true fans and the people who actually want to take the time to get to know me know who I am. The guy who sits in his mom’s basement and types on his mom’s computer, I couldn’t really care less about.”

I’m actually not upset with Chipper Jones’ feelings towards those that write about baseball on the internet all day because the day that Chipper Jones agrees with his critics is the day that he can no longer cut it in Major League Baseball. Instead, I’m upset that that he used such a stale and overused cliche to describe bloggers.

A few new recommendations other than “the guy in his mom’s basement”:

  • The girl that lives in her mother’s basement.
  • The guy who brings his laptop to Starbucks, orders a tall Earl Grey and sits there for four hours.
  • The guy who works a low-paying job and blogs while looking over his shoulder for his boss or HR representative.
  • The well-paid escort who needs something to do with his/her days.
  • The guy who shares a studio apartment with his girlfriend and blogs instead of “combing through Craigslist job listings all day” like he says.
  • The high-powered attorney who hates his life and escapes to write about baseball all day.

And that’s just a few. So next time, Chipper, please don’t rely on overused stereotypes when there is a world of baseball nerds to make fun of.

Anyone have any more? Leave them in the comments.
