Miguel Cabrera’s Drinking Problem is More Serious Than Originally Thought

Though no one other than Jim Leyland was taking Miguel Cabrera’s drinking problem lightly, after all he did drink from a scotch bottle while arguing with a police officer last month, Frank Donnelly has offered up some new, much more embarrassing information.

While I’m not sure of the value or necessity of releasing this, the fact remains that Cabrera’s behavior went far beyond something that a standard “I’m sorry, I was drunk,” apology could smooth over.  According to Donnelly:

"When [bar manager Fletcher] Nail again asked him to leave, Cabrera patted a bag on his shoulder and leaned down close to the manager’s face.

"You don’t know me," Cabrera told him. "I will kill you. I know all of you, and I will kill all of you and blow this place up."

Another witness, an agent with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission who was at the bar, told investigations that the ballplayer threatened him and Nail.

Cabrera said “he had a gun in his bag for us,” said the agent.”

For what it’s worth, the police reports make no mention of a gun being found on Cabrera. While it’s certainly possible that the Tigers feel that the structure and support they can offer Cabrera during the season is best, I worry that allowing him to stay with the team and not enter a rehab facility could be detrimental to his recovery.
