The Fantastic Voyage: 4/27/11
Dodgers 5, Marlins 4 (10 innings) – Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 24 games and hit the game-winning home run in the top of the 10th. Vincente Padilla earned the save. Not a bad win for the Dodgers.
Reds 7, Brewers 6 (10 innings) – A Drew Stubbs homer in the top of the 10th was the difference in this one. Aroldis Chapman came into the game in the bottom of the 8th and got Ryan Braun to ground out with the bases loaded (velocity was not a problem).
Rockies vs. Cubs – Postponed. Ho-hum. Etc.
Braves 7, Padres 0 – Tommy Hanson struck out 10 batters in 7 solid innings, and the offense gave him plenty of support. The Padres continue to struggle at the plate. Mat Latos took his 4th loss of the season to go along with a 4.98 ERA.
Phillies 8, Diamondbacks 4 – Cole Hamels picks up his 3rd win, and Placido Polanco continues to be productive batting second, going 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored. He’s hitting .389 on the season and getting on base at a .448 clip. Chris young hit 2 home runs for the Diamondbacks.
Athletics 2, Angels 1 – Brian Fuentes blows the save in the 9th but earns the win due to a Connor Jackson fielder’s choice RBI. The Angels are on a bit of a skid right now.
Orioles 5, Red Sox 4 – I blame this one on Rick Dempsey. Josh Beckett gave up back-to-back home runs to Luke Scott and Adam Jones, which resulted in three runs. Jeremy Guthrie pitched 6 and struck out 7 while giving up no runs. The Red Sox scored 4 in the 8th, but the Orioles pulled back ahead after Daniel Bard came out to pitch.
Indians 7, Royals 2 – Despite Jeff Francoeur’s best efforts, the Royals fell to the Indians. The Indians are 15-8, and as a team, they rank 2nd in runs, 4th in batting average, 2nd in OBP, and 4th in slugging percentage. If they keep this up, the AL central will be very interesting this year.
Mariners 10, Tigers 1 – Seattle absolutely explodes for 10 runs, and if anything, that’s an understatement for this team. Justin Smoak drove in 5 runs and hit his 4th round tripper. The surprise in this one? Erik Bedard needed just 88 pitches to get through 7 innings and gave up just 1 run.
Yankees 3, White Sox 1 – Bartolo Colon continues to pitch well for a Yankees team that certainly needs it – 8 IP 1 ER 6 K. Robinson Cano provided the offense with a 3-run home run in the first inning. Adam Dunn collected 2 hits, but his average sits at .172, and he struck out twice.
Pirates 2, Giants 0 – Pittsburgh needed 5 pitchers to get through this one, but they held onto the lead. The Giants managed 4 hits and 4 walks off of starter James McDonald, but they couldn’t make anything happen – the offense has been rather without punch, “punchless” if you will, lately. Madison Bumgarner pitched 6 solid for San Francisco.
Mets 6, Nationals 3 – This was a close game until the top of the 9th, where New York scored 4 times off of Sean Burnett. The Mets have won 6 in a row, and Jason Bay collected 2 hits and continues to look like he could bounce back from the concussion that caused him to miss a large portion of last season, and the ribcage injury that saw him on the DL for the beginning of this season.
Rangers 7, Blue Jays 6 - A Mitch Moreland home run was the difference in this one. Jo-Jo Reyes lasted just 2 and 1/3 for Toronto, and Derek Holland wasn’t effective in 5 innings for Texas.
Cardinals 6, Astros 5 - Matt Holliday played through a cold and had three hits. The last time I had a cold, I couldn’t even play video game baseball, so good for Holliday. Kyle Lohse got his fourth win and his ERA sits at 1.64. Dave Duncan is a genius.
Rays 8, Twins 2 - Francisco Liriano’s ERA now stands at 9.13 and he has an 18/18 K/BB ratio. Remember when we were calling the Twins crazy for shopping Liriano in the offseason? Maybe those whipsmart Twins were on to something. Sam Fuld went 1-2 with 3 walks.
