Things I Learned Today

Ben Zobrist

1. The Zorilla is a an actual, real life animal. (It is a striped polecat.)

2. Ben Zobrist still carries a mean baseball bat.

The Rays moved to two games above .500 as they absolutely obliterated the Twins for the second day in a row, this time by the score of 15-3. Johnny Damon and Matt Joyce each had three hits, but the real star was Zobrist who went 4-6 with a home run, two runs scored, and eight RBI. Those eight runs batted in set a new Rays record and naturally meant that I had him on my fantasy team bench today. Well, live and learn.

The game pushed Zobrist’s batting average up 31 points to .236, and he is now tied for the Major League lead in RBI. He may not be a .297 hitter again, but a second baseman with power, oodles of plate discpline, and a glove that can play multiple positions is a rare gem, indeed.

Nick Blackburn was torched for seven runs, five earned, in three-and-a-third innings, bringing his ERA to 5.14. Considering the amount of contact he gives up and an infield with Michael Cuddyer installed at second base, that shouldn’t be a surprise.
