The Fantastic Voyage: 4/28/11
Giants 5, Pirates 2 - How often do teams commit four errors and win? Unfortunately, I couldn’t figure out how to calculate that using Play Index so perhaps we’ll never know. I’m going to guess its not very often. Ryan Vogelsong had his revenge on his former team, striking out 8 over 5.2 innings and getting his first win of the season. I can honestly say that I never thought Ryan Vogelsong would come back to beat the Bucs. Shows what I know.
Mariners 7, Tigers 2 - Miguel Olivo homered for the second time this series, this time not needing a Ryan Raburn assist to do it. Brad Penny lasted seven innings, an accomplishment in itself, but nothing can stop Michael Pineda who made Tigers batters look silly with 9 K’s over his six innings.
Rays 15, Twins 3 (Game 1) - Ben Zobrist drove in eight runs. That should explain everything.
Rays 6, Twins 1 (Game 2) - And he added a two-run home run in the second game. 10 RBI in a single day must feel pretty damn good.
Blue Jays 5, Rangers 2 - Corey Patterson bunted in the winning run, but scored on one of the most unusual plays you’ll ever see. I suggest that you take a look at the clip (which I would love to embed by the way, thanks MLB), but for those that hate clicking: Bautista breaks for third after the play, realizes Patterson’s standing there, runs back to second, the ball gets thrown into the outfield, and Corey Patterson runs home to score. Only Bautista can make a boneheaded play look good.
Red Sox 6, Orioles 2 - Jon Lester moved to 14-0 against the Orioles as they fell into last place. Well, it was a good April run while it lasted.
Yankees 12, White Sox 2 - The ERAs of the 4 pitchers that threw for the White Sox today: 5.86, 9.64, 8.31, 4.15. If you want to know why Sox are 10-16 you don’t have to look much further. Sure, their defense and hitting hasn’t been great either, and that represents the other 2/3’s of the sport, but their pitching has been pretty blagh. Nick Swisher took advantage of this and picked up three hits including his first home run of the season.
Indians 8, Royals 2 - So the Royals weren’t for real, but the Indians now have the best record in the American League. Can’t wait for those really sharp looking Navy ‘Block C’ Indians caps to become the rage. Grady Sizemore picked up two hits and is now hitting .390 since returning to the sport. And despite all the love for Kyle Davies rate statisics this season, you’ll be hard pressed to find much to like in his 3.1 inning, 8 run game.
Nationals 3, Mets 3 - Apparently being the target of an FBI probe only makes Livan Hernandez a better pitcher. Hernandez went eight innings and gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned) against the Mets to get his third win of the season. I’ve been waiting for the cruel correction to come, but since the beginning of last season, Livan Hernandez has thrown 250.2 innings with an ERA of 3.60. Maybe he really has found the fountain of youth somewhere.
Cardinals 11, Astros 7 - Astro fans booed Lance Berkman, a 12 year veteran of the team, and then the Astros sent scrappy scrapperson Joe Inglett down after the game. They deserve everything that came to them last night.
Diamondbacks 11, Cubs 2 - Ryan Dempster’s line: 0.1 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 0 K. That’s all that really needs to be said, now doesn’t it?
