Desperately Seeking Pitching

After getting clobbered by a combined score of 36-1 against the Brewers during the last three days, the Pirates are in need of pitching. Unfortunately, there’s not much in the minors to fill the rotation spot. Kevin Hart can’t find the strike zone if his life depended on it, Tim Alderson, acquired in the Freddy Sanchez trade last season, has lost much of his prospect sheen in the last year, and the Bucs want to give Brad Lincoln more time in AAA.

That’s why they turn to Chris Jakubauskas to go against the Astros on Saturday. Jaku has two things working for him:

  1. His hilariously cool last name.
  2. He spent four seasons in independent ball. And made it to the major leagues. That’s awesome!

Unfortunately he also has one thing not going for him:

  1. He’s not very good.

It’s possible that Jaku is a late bloomer and it took him some time to figure things out. He didn’t spend much time in the affiliated minors and put up some decent numbers, so it’s possible he could come up and post a mid 4’s ERA. And the Pirates would love to have that on the roster. I’ll be rooting for him, I won’t be surprised if he’s back on a bus to Indianapolis soon.
