The Pirates lost again today making it five losses in a row and dropping their season record to 7-10, tied with the Astros. However, this is a loss that I won’t complain too much about. The bullpen came into this game already overworked and new call-up Chris Jakubauskas had to exit after the game after being struck in the head and neck area with a line drive in the first inning. The good news is that he appears to be okay, but will be spending the night in the hospital and the team is still awaiting radiology reports.
So, it’s almost a miracle that the Pirates only lost 5-2. The bullpen was in shambles and for yet another game needed to pitch for most of the game. It’s also amazing that the players could remain focused when one of their own could be in serious condition. So, chalk this game up as a loss and one that I will happily take as long as I can trade it for Jakubauskas health.
Notes:
Andrew McCutchen drove in only his second run of the season, which is shocking considering how good he’s looked at the plate. Though with no one else hitting, and McCutchen down at .254, it shouldn’t be shocking.
The Pirates struck out 10 times with eight of those K’s coming from the 1-4 batters. I’d love to see if any team makes less contact than the Pirates.
Hunter Pence went 2-4, raising his average to .190. It’s amazing that the Astros have even won 7 games with their offense as bad as it’s been.
