The Art of the Nickname

Most nicknames are nothing more than the first letter in the first name and the first syllable of the last. Too many A-Rod’s, K-Rod’s, etc. It’s sad. Luckily, there is Mr. Throwback Nyjer Morgan who’s doing all he can to bring the nickname back. Maybe if we all team-up and work hard, we can make this fantasy reality.

From ESPN the Magazine, here are some of Nyjer Morgan’s more inventive names for his teammates:

Peter Franchise is what I call Ryan Zimmerman. The franchise part is obvious. The first part? Well, he kind of looks like a Pete.

Freddie Physical is my name for Adam Dunn. He’s a hurtin’ on the ball and he’s solid…

And then there’s me, Tony Plush. That started with my boys back home. I’m the flamboyant guy; I like bringing energy to the team. And I figure that if I’m out there on the ball field entertaining my cats with this and that, why not have a name that sounds like an entertainer’s?

I miss Nyjer Morgan on the Pirates a lot. And I didn’t think I would.
