Another day, another Pirates starter failing to pitch five innings and yet another loss. Six dropped in a row now, and the Buccos have fallen to 7-11. But hey! At least our record rhymes in case we want to make a song.
Some notes:
- Charlie Morton, who has the talent to lead any rotation, lasted only 3 innings giving up 5 runs. His ERA stands at 16.20
- In five of the last six games, the Pirate starters failed to go longer than five innings. Duke pitched five against Milwaukee, and Maholm tossed seven against Houston on Friday. The bullpen is spent.
- Due to the lack of pitchers, the Pirates called up Brian Burres and Brian Bass. Both pitched today. It looks like the Pirates will be calling up Jeff Karstens to pitch on Tuesday. At this point, the Pirates don’t want to win. They just want to survive baseball games.
- The Astros were like the Rangers earlier this week. They stole 6 bases, three from Michael Bourn. The only reason there weren’t more steals is that the Astros got too big of a lead to keep running.
- Big Puma hit his first home run of the season, if you like things like that.
And now the Pirates must return to play Milwaukee. After losing 36-1 in the first series, I feel like it can’t get worse. But with the pitchers that are being thrown, it very easily could.
