The Fantastic Voyage: 5/26/11
Orioles 6, Royals 5 (12 innings) - Nolan Reimold, baby!
Red Sox 14, Tigers 1 (8 innings) - The news reports will claim that this game was called early because of rain. But the players know it’s because the Tigers couldn’t take it anymore. The bottom four of the Red Sox order went 10-for-20 with 8 RBI. Alfredo Aceves is also the anti-Jo-Jo Reyes, getting the win in his last 12 decisions.
Phillies 10, Reds 4 - While losing Homer Bailey, the Reds most effective pitcher this season, to a shoulder injury was bad enough on its own, having it happen the day after the 19 inning marathon is a disaster. Daryl Thompson sucked it up for 3 innings, getting battered to the tune of 5 runs, but the Reds escaped to play another day. Cliff Lee was a man on a mission, saving the Phillies pen with 8 innings and tossing in 2 hits and 3 RBI for good measure.
Cubs 11, Mets 1 - Tony Campana got his first start as a Major Leaguer and rewarded his manager with three hits and some fine defensive work in the outfield. Unfortunately, R.A. Dickey’s pitchface and love of literature couldn’t save him from injuring his foot and exiting the game only 2.2 innings into it.
Athletics 4, Angels 3 - Every Athletics starter picked up a base hit. When Coco Crisp came into the game leading the team in batting average while hitting .269, that’s impressive. Brett Anderson goes eight shutout before Mark Trumbo was able to hit a three-run shot to make it look close.
Marlins 1, Giants 0 - Anibal Sanchez: damn he’s fine. Ryan Vogelsong takes the loss despite one-run allowed in eight innings, lowering his ERA to 1.77. Before this year, I’m not sure Ryan Vogelsong’s ERA was ever better than 1.77 after Opening Day.
White Sox 3, Blue Jays 1 - Three teams had Humber this offseason, but it was only the White Sox who elected to keep him. Humber went 7.2 innings and allowed only one run to get the victory while Juan Pierre went all old school to knock in the winning runs.
Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3 - The Diamondbacks have won nine of their last ten games. I read the box scores every day and a) I didn’t realize this was happening and b) how is this happening? I really don’t know. With the Giants and Rockies reeling from major injuries, this is the time for the Diamondbacks to make their move and apply some serious pressure in the West.
