Wins, What Are You Good For?
A common theme this weekend has been the value of pitcher wins, but we’ve yet to even consider reliever wins. It’s a good time to talk about them as on the day that Arizona Diamondbacks took control of first place, take a gander at Aaron Heilman’s season: 4-0, 8.10 ERA, 16.2 IP, 27 H, 4 HR, 19/4 K/BB.
Sure, most of Heilman’s ERA damage comes courtesy of his April 13th (1.2 IP, 6 ER) and May 24th outings (1 IP, 5 ER), but he’s also given up 27 hits in only 16.2 innings. Only Dan Hudson and Ian Kennedy have more victories, but they also have about 60 more innings on Heilman.
Heilman will sure take on some more losses as the season progresses, but considering that the Diamondbacks are strangely sitting atop the NL West, Heilman’s first two months may be among the weirdest on their stat sheet of oddities.
