Jake Peavy is Positively Cliff Lee-ian
As Jake Peavy worked his way back from the DL, it was anyone’s guess as to what he’d have left in his arm. Unlike Tommy John surgery which is almost a guarantee for success at this point, there hasn’t been a lot of detached latissimus dorsi muscles in the sport. Worry no longer.
Peavy won his second game of the year while pitching seven shutout innings against the Red Sox while giving up three runs, striking out two and walking zero. The walk total is the big number to look at, especially as it came against baseball’s fourth-most walk friendly team.
In 25 innings this season, Peavy has struck out 16 while walking one measly batter. While Peavy has always been good at keeping his walks down (career 2.88 BB/9), he has focused on control since returning. Perhaps this is in response to the lowest average fastball velocity of his career, though at 91.0 mph, it’s just a few ticks down from the last few years (91.8 in ‘09, 91.1 in ‘10). It’s even possible that he’ll build up strength in the coming months and the point will become moot.
Of course, assuming that Peavy remains healthy through the season, he can give away some of that velocity if he continues to hit his spots this well. With an average of 0.36 BB/9 the chances that he will be burned by big innings is relatively slim.
For discussion’s sake, the current K/BB leader is Roy Halladay at 6.62 and Jeremy Guthrie leads the lead in BB/9 with 1.34.
