In just about any other circumstance, the 10th-inning grand slam Kendry Morales hit Saturday to beat the Mariners would have been referred to as a walk-off.
Except this time, he didn’t.
Enveloped in the obligatory mob of teammates awaiting him at home plate, Morales slipped and injured his left ankle. He had to be taken off the field on a stretcher and went immediately for X-rays, leaving what should have been a celebratory postgame clubhouse “morose.”

I was at this game and it was one of the weirdest moments of my life. The Angels fans around me went from celebrating the walk-off grand slam to standing around wondering what the hell was happening on the field. “What happened? Who is that? Is that Morales? No way! Is he hurt? How could he be hurt? This is insane,” was the common refrain.
I’d be interested in seeing how gingerly the Angels celebrate after their next big win.
