Whatever Max Scherzer changed while he was in AAA, I think it’s working. In his first start back on the big league roster, Scherzer struck out 14 Athletics batters in 5.2 innings while walking only four. All those strikeouts kept him from going deeper as he left after 113 pitches. Had he been able to go any deeper in the game, he could have threatened the single game strikeout record.
