Jim Leyland Explains How to Reverse a Decision
In the seventh inning of the Blue Jays and Tigers game, first base umpire Ed Rapuano originally called Andy Dirks safe at first after a bunt attempt, but soon changed course after a conference with home plate umpire, Alfonso Marquez. This lead Jim Leyland to exit the dugout and hold a passionate debate with the umpiring crew to come to a deeper understanding of each other. During their discussions about the nature of safety, Leyland decided to outline the thought process that an umpire must go through before changing a call. Leyland was even kind enough to pantomime his actions for the hearing impaired.
Step One: Think About It

Don’t rush to any snap judgements. Take your time and consider all the information available.
Step Two: Discard Preconceived Ideas

Don’t allow your previous decisions or pride enter into your judgement. Be sure to be an impartial judge, not only to the teams involved, but to yourself.
Step Three: Make a Rational Decision

In this case that would be an “out.” Such a call is signaled with a closed palm, save for an extended thumb.
The umpires were so pleased with Leyland’s lesson they even let him have the rest of the day off. Even without their field general, the Tigers still managed to defeat the Blue Jays 4-2.
