They’re D’Baaack*
Hardball Talk pointed me to the news that the Diamondbacks are willing to add payroll if that’s what it takes to win. I love announcements like this one because I love money. More importantly, they’re good examples of the fact the despite the soaring payrolls of a few teams, baseball remains a competitive sport. Articles that cede control over the playoffs as the domain of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies are often contradicted by some quick examples (that most people outside of baseball fandom don’t bother to check) of past successes.
Arizona is a great example of team who’s using homegrown talent mixed with some shrewd trades. You can’t tell me that Daniel Hudson for Edwin Jackson wasn’t a steal, and that Ian Kennedy deal is looking pretty good right now, too. And Kirk Gibson is doing a swell job.
All the talk about reorganization that was in the air makes the news even more exciting (to me at least), but I’m also jumping to conclusions. The Diamondbacks have their work cut out for them in either winning the NL West or the Wild Card. At least they’ve got some fire.
Perhaps the smartest move was calling up a this year’s most fearsome power hitter.
