Karstens, pictured above laying down a successful suicide squeeze, doesn’t throw 90 mph. He doesn’t strike batters out. And, as Clint Hurdle alludes, he doesn’t look great in the post-game shower. 
And yet, Karstens is walking 1.77 batters per nine innings, is fifth in the league in ERA, and the Pirates are in second place. Baseball is a strange, chaotic, and wonderful beast.
