Gerardo Parra’s two run home was the difference in the Diamondbacks 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay, but no one is going to focus on that aspect. Instead, all eyes are going to Evan Longoria and BJ Upton’s donnybrook in the dugout.
The problem, as described by Joe Maddon:
“B.J. came in off the field after that particular play and everybody saw it, and some guys were not really pleased and certain things were said. He was set up on the other side—in other words a right-handed hitter he set up in right-center field and the guy pulled it into left-center. He just did not run as hard as he possibly could have after the ball, that was obvious. That one there just didn’t have a good look to it.
This is not the first time that Upton has been chastised for lack of hustle, only now it has exploded into the dugout. Upton had that amazing season in 2007 when he posted a 136 OPS+ while also putting up a 20/20, but since then he has been a major disappointment. Combine his poor performance with a history of effort problems, and his rope should be getting pretty tight. Especially when Desmond Jennings is only a phone call away.
