Tyler Colvin hit a three run home run and Ryan Dempster went 7 innings with only three runs charged against him in the Cubs 8-6 victory against the White Sox snapping the South Siders run of victories at 11.
Dempster improved to 6-6 and Colvin is now hitting .296 with 11 home runs having become the lone pleasant surprise for the Cubs this season. Baseball Prospectus called for Colvin to post a .245/.295/.413 slash line this season and said he is “more likely to be a bench player than a starting corner outfielder.”
Plenty of times a hot start by a rookie has proven to be nothing more than beginner’s luck based on lots of fastballs, but Colvin seems to be a revelation. While he probably won’t keep his average up considering he is striking out in nearly a third of his plate appearances and his BABIP is .341, Colvin should still combine decent pop with a strong glove in the corner. If he can ever learn to take a walk, Colvin may even be able to post a few All Star appearance in his career. Knowing the Cubs luck, Colvin will probably look directly at the sun tomorrow and be blinded for the rest of his life.
