And a great cry rose up out of Detroit with the sound of a million rockets taking off at once. The name they shouted from their rooftops, from their mountains and from their inner cities was “Laird! Laird! Laird!”
Gerald Laird hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to ice the Tigers 7-5 victory over the Twins and give the Tigers sole possession of first place. It won’t all be cheers in Motor City tonight though, as Joel Zumaya, following three consecutive injury ravaged seasons, had to leave the game with another serious elbow injury. It’s quite possible that this will be the final straw in what should have been a brilliant career cut short. Hopefully Zumaya’s recovery will be quick and he’ll be able to pitch again, but at some point a man has to call it a day. Good luck, Joel.
Jim Thome homered and also tripled for the Twins. The last time he tripled was in 2004 when he was with the Phillies. I’d imagine Thome will need a few days just to recover from the exhaustion of having to sprint for that amount of time.
