Arthur Rhodes had tied the record for most appearances (33) for a pitcher without allowing a run, but because the baseball gods have a cruel sense of humor they decided to end it in the worst way possible.
After Joey Votto hit a three run home run to tie the game in a dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth, Arthur Rhodes came out and promptly gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and walk while failing to retire a single batter. Despite missing half of their infield, the Phillies beat the Reds 9-6.
That’s just the way baseball is: One day you haven’t allowed a run since April 10th, the next you can’t get a single man out.
